HDA Catalytic Housing
PROJECT INFO
Urban Design Framework for five mining towns South Africa 2015
Client: Housing Development Agency (HDA)
Team: Rudi Botha, Henri Comrie, Deon van Zyl, Tania Viljoen and Graeme Hurst
URBA was commissioned by the HDA to investigate the role that affordable housing can play in the integration and improvement of mining towns within the Northern Cape and the North West provinces.
Our research demonstrates the perpetuation of segregation and unsustainable development through low-density, low-quality generating subdivision. The proposals are for significantly more compact, catalytic development that incorporates a mix of uses within a walkable framework that balances public, semi-public, semi-private and private spaces.
The five mining towns of varying size that were considered are: Klerksdorp, Kathu, Kuruman, Olifantshoek and Postmasburg
