Henri Comrie won an open competition from 121 entries for the design of this sculptural and iconic building shortly after graduating as an architect in 1991.
The site is located immediately next to a major motorway linking Johannesburg and Pretoria. The call was for the design of an iconic building that symbolizes glass, but is of an affordable construction and ‘not nescessarily made of glass’.
The bold, faceted building engages with the motorway user in a dynamic, rotating fashion by revealing different aspects of its form as the observer passes it at speed and along a straight line.
